Some People I Don't Know

This piece is a mechanical representation of the way people move through life, meeting others, drifting away, wanting to be close or wanting to be alone, etc. We can never truly know another, yet the attempt, the clumsy confidence with which we cling to each other, is beautiful. The figures here, which are male and female and cast in urethane resin, are pushed and pulled by the central gears, each of which turns at a different rate. The pattern of movement repeats after 60 turns of the crank.
